Jakes Academy is an environment where golfers come from the junior to the adult level and engage with like-minded individuals to learn from premier golf instructors how to be successful in the game of golf. But, for those who have become familiar with Jakes Academy, it has proven to be so much more than that.
Jake Warde, the namesake of Jake's Academy, before his passing at the age of 94 in 2014
Jakes Academy was started by Doug Wherry, PGA from a passion for golf and understanding of its core principals, which came from one of his mentors, Jake Warde.
Most of Doug’s young life in golf was spent with his mentor Jake, learning some of life’s most important skills: faith, discipline, focus, vision, love, camaraderie, sportsmanship, humility, ethics, tradition, and self-esteem. Doug’s vision for coaching and mentoring golfers was solidified while running a junior boarding school for the Arnold Palmer Golf Academies. Doug was given a directive from Mr. Palmer while working at the school. “It is up to you to keep the fires of the game burning,”
Mr. Palmer said, “to pass the torch to the next generation, and explain to them the wonderful histories and traditions of our game.”
Doug has dedicated himself to doing just that.
The key to Jakes Academy’s success is not only its emphasis on teaching golf as a game, but as Jake showed Doug through their lessons together, its emphasis on life-skills development. With these skills students will be successful, not only on the golf course, but in high school, college, and the professional world. Jakes Academy strives to work with golfers who want to succeed at the highest level in the sport, however their focus expands much further than that.
